Moved to ohio and now i cant bet college... | Betzonic

Question

so i moved from vegas to columbus in august for work and i went to put a bet on a buckeyes receiver over on receptions like i always did and the app just says market unavailable. tried two other books, same thing. pro props work fine, nba nfl whatever. is this an ohio thing or did i miss some huge rule change while i was packing boxes lol. genuinely confused because i can bet the game spread no problem

yeah it's an ohio thing, the casino control commission killed college player props back in early 2024 after the ncaa went on their whole crusade about players getting harassed on social media. you can still bet ohio state spreads, totals, moneylines, futures, all that. just nothing tied to an individual kid. same deal in maryland, vermont and louisiana last i checked, and new york never allowed college props at all. pro props are untouched everywhere sports betting is legal so your nfl stuff is fine. i use My Bookie mostly and they just gray the college prop tab out entirely when you're inside ohio, whereas the other app i had kept showing me the market until i tried to place it which was way more annoying. if you drive to indiana or kentucky for a weekend the props pop back up since geolocation is what decides it, not where you signed up

can confirm the border thing. i live in cincy and literally cross into kentucky twice a season for big college saturdays. put $50 on a bearcats qb passing yards over from a parking lot in covington last november, hit it, cashed out at home no problem. felt dumb doing it but it worked

idk about the whole "drive across the border" plan. doesnt that flag your account? i thought books hated when your location jumps around a lot. seems like a good way to get a limit or a locked account over a $50 bet honestly

nah i thought the same at first. geolocation is literally designed for this, every book checks your gps at the moment you place the bet, thats the whole point of the system. people in nyc were driving to jersey for two years before ny went live and nobody got banned for it. what gets you flagged is vpn or spoofing your location, not physically standing in another state

for what its worth the list isnt static, it keeps moving. ohio, maryland, vermont, louisiana all pulled college player props in 2024. colorado did it too. north carolina launched with restrictions. oregon doesnt allow ANY college betting at all, not even spreads. massachusetts blocks props and in-state college games unless its a tournament. and then new jersey has always had the no-in-state-schools rule. so "which states allow player props" really means "pro props everywhere legal, college props depends"

wait so does the ban follow the school or the state im standing in? like if im in ohio can i bet a michigan players props, or if im in indiana can i bet a buckeye players props?

it follows where YOU are standing, not the school. in ohio you cant bet any college player prop, michigan alabama duke doesnt matter. in indiana you can bet a buckeye prop all day. jersey is the weird exception because there the rule is about the school (no rutgers/seton hall/games played in nj) rather than a blanket ban

honestly the thing that annoys me is how inconsistent the books are about it. i had a same game parlay built for a thursday nighter, three legs, went to add one more and the whole ticket wiped itself because one leg was a college prop i didnt realize was in there. lost the boosted odds too. support told me "state regulations" like ok cool thanks for nothing. also missouri just went live and half the prop markets were missing the first two weeks, felt like beta testing

that parlay wipe is real bad luck but in my experience its gotten a lot better this year. i'm in maryland and every app i have now just doesnt show college props at all so theres nothing to accidentally add. missouri being rough at launch is pretty normal tbh, ohio was the same in jan 2023, took a month before the prop menus were full depth

totally different legal bucket. those are daily fantasy pick'em products, not sportsbooks, so they're regulated (or not) under fantasy sports laws. thats exactly why a bunch of states sent them cease and desists — ohio, new york, michigan, florida, nevada all pushed back at various points and some of them had to switch to a peer-to-peer format to stay live. so a state can allow player props at a sportsbook and still block the pick'em apps, or vice versa. its a mess

driving to iowa or wisconsin tribal, thats it. no legal online option from inside mn, anything advertising otherwise is offshore and youre on your own if they decide not to pay you. iowa mobile is fine though, you can register on your phone the second you cross the line

worth adding washington state to the list of weird ones. betting is legal but only in person at tribal casinos, no statewide mobile at all. so props exist there but you have to physically be at the property. and nevada is its own animal, they allow college props but not on nevada schools like unlv, plus everything is retail-first with the app registration thing

the ncaa is still lobbying for a nationwide college prop ban fwiw, charlie baker has been pretty loud about it. a few more states have added restrictions since 2024 so anyone reading this in six months should just check their own regulator page instead of trusting a reddit thread

OP here — ended up just accepting my fate lol. pro props are honestly all i need, been doing nfl receptions and nba pra and its fine. did the kentucky drive once for a saturday and it worked exactly like people said, gps picked it up in like 4 seconds. thanks for actually explaining this, every article i googled was some seo blob that said nothing
