so im in ohio visiting family for like 3 weeks and the sportsbook i use back home doesnt work here. was thinking about just using a vpn to make it look like im still in NJ. has anyone actually done this or is it a terrible idea? really dont want to miss the playoffs lol

Yeah this is the right answer. I used to try the vpn thing all the time and eventually got my account limited then straight up banned. They track way more than just your IP, like your device info and payment methods too. Just use whatevers legal where you are

fwiw ohio actually has legal sports betting now so you should have options. draftkings, fanduel, betmgm all operate there. might have to make a new account but at least you wont get banned from your main book

wait so what happens if you win big while using a vpn? do they just take it all or do you get your original deposit back at least?

Nope they can confiscate everything. Winnings AND your deposit. Its in the terms of service, using a VPN to circumvent geo restrictions is considered fraud basically. Ive seen people lose thousands this way

idk man i feel like people exaggerate how good these detection systems are. i know a few guys who use vpns all the time and never had issues. maybe theyre just not withdrawing huge amounts?

nah bro its not about the amount its about when they decide to actually check. they might let small stuff slide but the moment you try to withdraw anything significant they run verification and thats when it all falls apart. the detection tech is legit, they use GPS spoofing checks, device fingerprinting, payment geolocation... its not just IP anymore

For what its worth the legal reason this matters is that sportsbooks have licenses in specific states only. If they let people bet from unlicensed states they risk losing their operating licenses entirely so theyre super strict about it

this whole state by state thing is such garbage honestly. like i can drive 20 minutes and suddenly i cant use my regular book? make it make sense america. other countries just have national licensing but nooo we gotta make everything complicated

I mean yeah it sucks but thats just how gambling regulation works here. Each state gets to decide. Some states dont want it at all. At least its getting better, like 5 years ago you basically couldnt bet anywhere legally. Progress is progress even if its slow

can confirm what the top comment said, ohio has plenty of legal options now so you really dont need to mess with vpns. made an account when i moved here and had no problems. just bring your ID for verification and youre good
