Question

How do i actually place my first bet online? feel dumb asking

ok so my buddies all bet on nfl games and im finally trying to get in on it this season. i made an account somewhere, deposited $50, and then just stared at the screen for like 20 minutes lol. theres spreads, moneylines, totals, +130, -110, parlays, teasers... i genuinely dont know what im clicking. is there like a normal first bet people make or do i just pick a team and hope? also do i need to verify my id before i can bet or after

can confirm on the moneyline thing. my first ever bet was chiefs ml at like -180 and i won like $5.50 on a $10 bet and was weirdly thrilled about it. small and boring is the way to start honestly. i lost way more later when i got cocky with 6 leg parlays

wait so does the geolocation thing mean i literally cant bet if im visiting my sister in a state where its not legal? like the app just blocks me?

yep exactly. it uses your phone gps and if you're in a state without legal online sports betting it just greys everything out. you can still log in and see your balance, you just cant place anything. i drove through a non legal state on a road trip and it locked me out for 3 hours, super annoying but thats the law not the book

honestly my first bet experience sucked. deposit went through fine but then my account got flagged for "additional documentation" and i had to upload a photo of my license AND a utility bill. took 5 days and by then the game i wanted to bet was over. felt like a scam until it finally cleared

that happens but usually only if the info you typed doesnt match your credit file exactly. i typed my address with "st" instead of "street" and got flagged the same way. mine cleared in like 18 hours after i uploaded the license. annoying but its a KYC requirement, every licensed book has to do it

fwiw the spread and the total are not scary once someone explains it. spread = one team gets a head start, like -6.5 means they gotta win by 7+. total (over/under) = combined points both teams score. thats it. moneyline, spread, total covers like 90% of what casual people bet.

one thing nobody mentioned, check your payment method. i tried depositing with a credit card and my bank declined it as a cash advance. debit card worked instantly, paypal too. just something to know before you're sitting there mad on a sunday morning

how do those "bet $5 get $200 in bonus bets" things work? is that real money or

not real money, its bonus bets (used to be called free bets). you place them and if you win you only get the profit back, not the stake. so a $50 bonus bet at +100 pays you $50, not $100. still worth taking on a signup but read the terms, some expire in 7 days

start with one game you're actually watching. its way less confusing when you can see whats happening than staring at 14 college games you know nothing about

also worth saying deposit limits exist and you should set one on day one. most legal us books have responsible gaming settings buried in the account menu where you can cap daily or weekly deposits. i set mine at $100/week when i started and honestly it saved me during that stretch in november where i couldnt hit anything. took 30 seconds to set up

everyones acting like this is easy but the whole -110 thing means you need to win 52.4% just to break even. so realistically most of you telling him to "just start small" are down money and not saying it

i mean yeah? nobodys claiming this is an income stream. im down like $180 on the season and i knew that going in, its entertainment money. the guy asked how to place a bet not how to beat the vig. the 52.4% thing is exactly why people said keep it $5-10 and dont chase

OP here, finally did it. put $10 moneyline on the bengals, lost, put $10 on the lions the next week, won $12ish. the whole thing took like 15 seconds once i stopped overthinking it. verification was instant for me too. thanks to whoever said skip parlays, i watched my roommate lose a 7 leg on the last game and i want no part of that
