so my buddies have been betting nfl all season and im finally caving because sitting there watching games with zero action is boring lol. problem is i open these apps and its just a wall of numbers, +140 -110 alt lines teasers whatever. i have like $100 i dont mind losing. mostly nfl and some cbb. which app is least likely to make me feel stupid? and do i actually need to chase all those signup bonuses everyone keeps texting me about

i started last january and felt exactly the same, the screen legit gave me anxiety at first. what helped was ignoring parlays completely for like a month and just doing single moneyline bets at $5 a pop until the odds stopped looking like gibberish. i mostly use My Bookie these days because the bet slip is pretty clean and it shows your payout before you confirm, which sounds dumb but it saved me from a couple of accidental clicks early on. also just take whatever welcome offer you get once and then forget about it, the terms are usually fine but chasing them across five apps is how you end up with $100 spread over five accounts you never use again.

co-sign the $5 single bets thing. i did the same when i started in like october and honestly losing $5 twelve times taught me way more than the one $50 parlay i hit. also the payout preview is underrated, my first ever bet i thought i was risking $20 to win $20 and it was the opposite lol

fwiw the thing nobody tells beginners is that -110 just means you risk 110 to win 100, so on a $10 bet you win about $9.09. the plus number is what you win on 100. once that clicks the whole board makes sense. also depends what state you're in, not every book is live everywhere, i moved from ohio to texas and lost access to everything overnight

just a heads up on the tax thing since nobody mentions it to new people. if you hit something big enough you get a W-2G and the book reports it. most people never get near that but it's a real thing and it caught my brother in law off guard after a march madness parlay hit for like 4k.

one practical thing: have your ID and SSN ready before you sign up. verification is usually instant but mine got kicked to manual review because my address on file was my old apartment and it took 2 days plus emailing them a utility bill. not a scam, just annoying, and it happened right before a sunday slate.

wait so when people say "bonus bets" is that actual cash or no? i got $150 in them and the app shows it separately from my balance and i dont get it

not cash. you place a bet with it and if it wins you only keep the profit, the stake gets eaten. so a $50 bonus bet at +100 pays you $50 real money, not $100. thats why people put bonus bets on longer odds instead of heavy favorites, the stake is gone either way so you may as well swing

he's being a nerd but he's right. it's usually half a point on a spread or -110 vs -105, sounds like nothing but over a season it's real money. that said for your first month with $100 i wouldn't bother, one app is enough while you're learning. i only added a second book when i started caring about getting +6.5 instead of +6 on chiefs games

seconding the ignore parlays advice hard. i lost like $300 last fall on 6 leg same game parlays because they look fun and the payouts are shiny. switched to straight bets and unders on college totals and im down maybe $40 all season instead, which for me counts as a win honestly. set a deposit limit too, took me 5 minutes in the settings and it stopped me doing anything stupid on a tuesday night
